Draft #1 Summary_ReaderReponse: Nature Group Seeks More Information on Impact of Cross Island Line Site Investigations

In the article “Nature Group Seeks More Information on Impact of Cross Island Line Site Investigations” Neo (2018) states that nature lovers want to know detailed information about the effects of the drilling works in the Macritchie forest. Neo mention that Land Transport Authority (LTA) had been observing the camera traps captured animals that were at the risk of extinction. The drilling of 16 boreholes were to determine the alignment for Cross Island Line by either digging under the nature reserve or by skirting around it. In the article, it was mentioned that the authority did not release information on the exact number of animals sighting from the start to end of work. However, when being asked of the environmental effects, LTA chose to remain silent. Volunteers are expecting more comprehensive findings on the environmental effects from LTA so that it will give them a better understandings of the future Cross Island MRT planning.

The author addresses the effects of the drilling works in the Macritchie forest for the future Cross Island MRT line. Although the author did explain the effects and what careful measures they take, Neo could provide more detailed information on the soil test, environmental effects and the planning of the future Cross Island MRT line.

Firstly, Neo's article did not provide any details on soil tests. In the article "LTA Elaborates on Impact of Soil Tests.”, Tan mentioned that the test includes digging 70m underground to take out soil sample. The use of soil sample was to find ways to decrease the environment impact of soil works. The article also states that LTA will continue team up with stakeholders to further examine the data retrieved to have a better understandings of the soil works on fauna activities which in the article "Nature Group Seeks More Information on Impact of Cross Island Line Site Investigations” was not written inside.

Secondly, Neo's article failed to explain the environmental effects. In the article "Protect our environmental reserves like fiscal reserves", stated that few of the "natural" disasters have a certain level of human responsibility and which is in fact is entirely man-made. Hermes argued that proposing of Cross Island MRT line at Singapore's largest nature reserve and catchment may cause some consequences on the water supply. It will also affect the sustainability of the forest plus the ecosystem that was built up. With this article providing information of what environmental impact may happen. Thus, it would give the public some understanding.

Lastly, Neo's article failed to mention the detailed plannings of future Cross Island MRT line. In the article "MRT soil probe: Steps to ease impact on wildlife working", Wong said that the plan was so comprehensive that they went to identify how does the engine pump works in order to prevent petrol spillage. Another measures was mentioned is that the boreholes will be located on existing trails and clearing in order to reduce any impact on the existing flora. Even though all these information may seems small, it will show the public that many considerations was taken into account.

Although in Neo's article, it does explained the environmental impacts and planning of the Cross Island MRT line. It still lacks of certain important points which will provide the public with better understanding of what is going on.
