In the article “Smart buildings
key to saving energy”, Lim (2019) stated many organisations were slowly moving
towards system integration as they were showing interest in energy savings and
efficiency. He also mentioned that the top three decisions for energy
investment were energy cost savings, greenhouse gas reduction and increasing
energy security. Technology such as the intelligent building management
system(BMS) would interact with the building to understand its conditions, by
receiving and analysing data. It would then show its perception on ways to
improve energy efficiency.
However, smart buildings could
still be in danger despite advancing cybersecurity. He also found that about 75
percent of business in Asia Pacific might become victims of undiscovered
breaches. Cyberthreats might also cause local organisations to lose around
US$17.7 billion(S$24 billion). The obstacles faced in energy efficiency
projects was due to the lack of qualified personnel in cybersecurity. As
cybersecurity was not a main focus for many organisations, it could be
expensive and inefficient to build up dedicated teams. With the lack of experts
in cybersecurity to evaluate or execute the projects, it became one of the top
barriers to chase after energy efficiency initiatives.
With this article, it would
create a better understanding of why smart buildings was the key to saving
energy. The reason why I chose this article was because it linked directly to
my group's objective of minimising energy usage and reducing carbon emissions
via building automation systems (BAS). Therefore, with this article, it would
help us create a better awareness of BAS.

ReplyDeleteThank you very much, Calvin, for sharing this summary of a newspaper article. Though the article is not from an academic journal, it has useful information that is relevant to the focus of your project, as you mention.
ReplyDeleteYour in-text citation is fine, too, but there are minor problems in the reference using the APA style. Check out this webpage: http://columbiacollege-ca.libguides.com/apa/newspapers
Finally, there are some language issues (see subject-verb agreement errors). That being said, I do appreciate your hard work. I'll give more specific feedback in class
Thanks Prof. Brad!
